Kerry - an ideal model for agencies working together
Kerry was referred to Passport in January 2007 by her Throughcare and Aftercare worker, Lynne Wallace. Kerry was 17 years old, living in hostel accommodation and unemployed since leaving school. She had no work experience and despite Lynne's attempts to get her to start a training course, Kerry didn't know what she wanted to do.
Kerry's positive working relationship with Lynne was essential in Kerry's initial engagement with Passport. Lynne provided constant encouragement and practical support to enable Kerry to make appointments.
Through Passport, Kerry worked towards three simple goals: getting her own flat, getting a job and improving her health. Kerry, Lynne and Passport met in the early stages and agreed respective roles and how they would keep each other up-to-date and manage progress whilst Kerry continued to try and resolve her on-going family issues.
Kerry engaged with both services regularly and in the months that followed gained her own tenancy, started weekly literacy support sessions with a youth literacy worker, began a voluntary placement in a day centre for the elderly and started and completed a five week training course with Work Track on preparing for work in the care sector.
Throughout this course both Passport and Lynne kept in regular contact with Kerry and liaised to sort out financial issues, manage concerns over Kerry's attitude whilst on the course, resolve housing issues and to provide positive reinforcement of Kerry's continuous progress.
This inter-agency working arguably assisted Kerry to raise her career aspirations, to start a training course and, most importantly, to sustain this course.
