Claire - the right opportunities at the right time
Claire heard about the Passport service through her Throughcare and Aftercare worker, Carole Tilston, and started the programme by attending a series of taster courses to explore employment and education opportunities in the travel industry.
Claire was keen to gain as many qualifications as she could. As a result, three weeks later, she began the Introduction to Media course with Passport and Media Education.
Claire has a two year old daughter who was living with foster carers and wanted to demonstrate to herself and others that she could work constructively with services to provide a stable environment for her daughter to return to from care.
Claire completed the various courses and gained two SQA qualifications as a result. Importantly, this progress brought stability and Claire was successful in maintaining regular and reliable contact with her daughter, who was now in her care two periods a week.
Good progress was made until a fall-out with her family led to Claire disengaging. Before long, she began to drink heavily and lost contact with her daughter.
But two months later, Claire contacted Passport to say that she wanted to "get her life back on track."
Claire focused on some initial qualification attainment and then applied for a part-time nail technician course, arranging the ILA funding in the process, and a beauty therapy course with Jewel and Esk College.
Claire successfully gained a place on both courses and sustained them for 10 weeks and six weeks respectively. Her attendance and time keeping have been excellent and she is progressing well with both courses.
Whilst the issues surrounding Claire have not gone away, and it seems her daughter will be adopted by her current foster family, Claire is determined to sustain her courses as they are providing her with a much needed alternative focus at a very difficult point in her life.
